New Years goals, bookish and otherwise.

Image
I am an extremely unmotivated person. I can be when I want to be, but honestly, I'd much rather be in bed with my cat and a book over almost anything else, so when it comes to stuff like working out, bettering myself, doing all those things people are "supposed" to do over New Years, I have failed every year. (Actually, all the way through junior high and high school, my NYE resolution was "get a boyfriend", and that never worked either.) This year, a very wise person ( coughELLEYcough ) said resolutions are crap because no one ever makes it more than a few weeks anyway, and then you just end up feeling bad about yourself because you failed. Instead, I will be making goals. Things that I hope to achieve over 2019, but won't necessarily beat myself up if I don't get to. Or thing I'd like to improve, but don't plan to dive obsessively into them full force (and then burn out in two weeks) because I know myself, and that's not how I roll.

But then a window of opportunity opens—a doctor she idolizes is marrying an old friend of hers in Germany. Felicity believes if she could meet this man he could change her future, but she has no money of her own to make the trip. Review: The Boyfriend Game

Image
The Boyfriend Game Author: Stella Starling Publisher: Createspace Pub Date: July 24, 2018 Genre: Contemporary Romance, LGBT Rating: 3 stars Amazon | Goodreads Summary:  Carter Olson never expected he’d get a chance to date his older brother’s best friend, Rip Taylor.   Wished for it? Yes.  Fantasized about it? Possibly too much.  But ever thought it would actually happen? Not in a million years, since Rip is straight. But even if it’s just to try and win a gay game show, having Rip for a boyfriend—even a temporary/pretend one—is still the best thing to happen to Carter in... well,  ever .  Especially because Rip’s so good at it.  Amazingly  good, actually.  So good that Carter starts to hope that maybe it won’t have to end once the show’s over…  Review:  You know what I super love even though it's really tropey? Fake dating romances. Also friends to lovers. Not so much "in love with brother's best friend" but whatever, I got over that. The Boyfri

Bookish Rants: Douchebag heroes

I just checked out How To Date a Douchebag: The Studying Hours by Sarah Ney. By the very title, I figured out the hero would be a douche. Hello. Reading 7% of this book I have discovered what I should have frankly already known: I HATE DOUCHEY HEROES. SIT THE FUCK DOWN. Here's what I do love: the reformed bad boy. The "he was kind of a dick, but then she loved him and he became a good guy." What I love even more is the "I don't like you and you don't like me, but we need to help each other, and eventually we fall in love" schtick, which this book was also supposed to have. And maybe it does a good job. (I doubt it.) Because I honestly could not get past the part where the MC and his friends considered women little more than holes to be fucked, and talked about entirely in outdated female stereotypes. What made me through my Kindle on the bed in a huff was when one of the dudebros went "she's a DUFF!" (i.e. Designated Ugly Fat Friend

It's Challenge Time! - 2019 edition

Image
Peekaboo here! I'm stealing a page from Elley's book and posting about the reading challenges I will participate in starting in 2019.  In 2018, I tried to do way too many, and failed, so this year, I shall be doing three. Goodreads Challenge:  For 2018, I put a goal of 100 books, and then when I was 10 away from getting 150 books, so I switched it up. I think for 2019 I'm going to shoot for 125. The point is to set a fun goal but NOT stress myself out too much. Et voila.  (For the record, I do count children's books in with my reading goal. All reading is good reading, kthanksbaiiii.)  Let's Discuss 2019 (hosted by  Nicole @ Feed Your Fiction Addiction  and  Shannon @ It Starts at Midnight )  My whole goal for 2019 is to be more creative, and one of the ways I leak out creativity is via writing, so I am hoping this challenge gives me more things to write and discuss, bookishly. Signups are not up yet, but as soon as they are, I'll hop on this bu

Kindle Unlimited, and why Elley Otter is a great friend to have, but is also evil.

Kindle Unlimited. It's an excellent invention for binge readers, especially those who like romances and zombie novels. (I.e. yours truly.) The deal is: for 10 bucks a month (or slightly less if you buy a yearly subscription) you have access to over one million titles for free. You can "check out" ten at a time, and keep on going until your eyeballs pop out. Sounds awesome. And it IS rather awesome. Will it have all the hot new releases you want to get your mitts on? No, probably not. It may have last year's though! What it does have is a lot of those slightly less well known romance authors whose stuff you may not be able to get through your local library. Ditto the science fiction/apocalypse authors. (For instance, I got this beauty to read, and they have the whole series on KU.) Does it look like an enormous waterbear trying to eat a ship to you too? The whole damn series is like this. I'm so excited!! Money is usually a bit tight for me, which is why I
